Wolfpack Basketball: Historical Perspectives

Welcome! I like to tell the story that I've been an North Carolina State fan since the day my dad told me he was a Chapel Hill graduate. As a thirty-plus year fan of NCSU basketball, I've seen the program at its best and worst. I was rooting them on in 1983 against the Houston Phi Slamma Jamma team, and I've been waiting for the inevitable return to glory ever since. You know, like Cubs fans have waited until next year since 1908 2016.

Anyway, I started this collection of pages as a complete lark to help me remember the history of a team that has caused me on more than one occasion to go hoarse from screaming at the television. For those of you who have followed the Wolfpack program as I have, I'm sure you can empathize. Watching a team that has the ability both to shoot the lights out from three-point range and go scoreless for stretches of five minutes or more—often in the same game—has probably shaved a decade off my life expectancy.

While it would have been a lot easier being a Duke or UNC fan in terms of wins, it takes character to root for an underdog. Well, character and a strong spirit. Preferably bourbon. Especially around tournament time, when your team hasn't made it out of the Sweet 16 since you were a senior in high school.

If there is any justice in this world, I may yet live to see NC State win both the regular season and ACC tournament titles in the same season. It would also be nice to see the Pack add another NCAA title; since beating Houston in 1983, we've sat at home watching Duke, UNC, and even Maryland win the NCAA championship. And Maryland's in the damn Big 10 now. We're long overdue to hang another banner in the rafters, if you ask me....
